Tucker, Hot Dogs and God’s Word

Last July our son, Joshua, walked into the house with a 3 month old yellow lab. He was adorable! All the puppy things we loved about puppies when we were growing up; laying on the floor and letting him chew on your ears; puppy breath; rushing to get them out doors when they get “that look” on their face. Fast forward 9 months and Tucker is now a horse. 80lbs and still growing, but we love him. We are keeping Tucker while Josh is in transition between places to live up at College Station – Texas A & M.

We love this dog.

The other morning I noticed we had a couple of hot dogs in a container in the refrigerator, so I thought I would give Tucker a treat. He usually swallows things whole so I knew they wouldn’t last long. I them in the air one at a time and he jumped up and caught them in mid-air. I thought as usual, he swallowed them whole. Moments later I saw them on the ground, completely whole. I was puzzled. Did he throw them up? Did he not like them? That was a stupid question. This dog eats phone chargers and computer power cords. I realized something and at that point God shared with me a lesson.

The meat of the hot dog was in a casing and Tucker couldn’t taste the meat. He could smell it but he couldn’t taste it so it was of no real value to him, so he left them on the ground. Psalm 34:8, Taste and see that the LORD is good. For Tucker to enjoy the hot dogs I needed to break the casing so he could really smell the meat and actually taste the meat, eat it and enjoy the benefits of the meat.

How many times have we just “sniffed” at the Word? We know what’s in there, we know it’s good and we know it will do us good, but we never seem to get past the “casing”. We might get a little taste off the casing, but to really “dig in” just takes too much of an effort and I don’t have the time. We many time miss out on God’s best for us because we don’t take the time to “taste and see”.

I encourage you this week to “taste and see” how good God really is. Take the Word, get alone, break through your usual standard of operation when it comes to the Scriptures; break through the casing to the real meat and realize how good God is; how beneficial the Word is and how it really works for you today, in this time, in your situations. If you do like Tucker you will have a smile on your face and wanting more.

You have a great day and we will see you on Sunday. Have a good day, alllllllllll day!
