The month of February brings a lot of plans, feelings and memories. As we look at the month we remember President’s Day, maybe a Leap Year, but mostly we remember Valentines Day. How did Valentine’s Day become a day of such popularity? I remember as a youth pastor, if I needed a 15 passenger van on Valentine’s Day I had to reserve it in November of the year before. Why, because the florist in town would rent all the vehicles and hire drivers for that day just to deliver all their orders. So how did Valentine’s Day begin? According to one legend, St. Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself.
While in prison, it is believed that St. Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor's daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today.
10CC, a group from the 70’s recorded a hit called “The Things We Do For Love”. It’s a good pop tune and the message is right, we do things we wouldn’t normally do when we are in love. Don’t believe me! Ask Teri about “Agent Orange”. While on the one hand we do incredible things, romantic things, and thoughtful things for those we love, we also can get so mad at them that we want to “spit nails”. It’s amazing that the one we love so much can make us so mad. The sad part about it is when we get mad and judge the heart of our loved one; we know what they meant; I know what they were trying to say; when in reality you missed the boat completely. The Bible says, “Who can know the heart”. Again it says, Get angry but don’t sin or James says, “Be slow to anger”. Getting angry is not wrong, but letting our anger control our judgment of someone is wrong. We must be people who get mad but love control our responses. It’s funny that the people we have the hardest time doing this with is our family; people we respect and love dearly; leaders; etc…
So this month begin a new direction in your love life. If your theme of love is the song by the group Nazareth, “Love Hurts”, let it take a new theme song from Lou Rawls and realize that “Love is in the Air”. Remember what James said in chapter 1 verse 19, “Be slow to speak, quick to listen and slow to anger. God bless and Happy Valentine’s – all year long.
